Wood Coating Application Process

Note: Varnish topcoat application must be completed before wall painting. The next step involves cleaning dust and dirt from the wood surface. Then, sand the board or wood trim surfaces until smooth and apply the first coat of paint. After this coat dries completely, use a mixture of tinted powder and cooked glue powder to fill nail holes and wood knots, blending them with the natural wood color. Once the filler is dry, carefully sand the roughened areas with fine sandpaper—this step is critical and requires meticulous attention to sanding quality. Then apply the second coat of paint. After it dries, sand again with fine sandpaper before applying the next coat (i.e., one coat of paint followed by fine sanding, repeated sequentially).

Generally, including the final coat, a total of 4 to 8 coats of topcoat are required to achieve a high-quality finish. While more coats tend to improve the result, exceeding 10 coats is not recommended. Additionally, during construction in humid weather, the paint film may appear whitish. This can be resolved by adding 10–15% nitrocellulose magnetized white water to the diluent.

Precautions for Wood Coating Construction

  1. Wood coating should be applied after floor construction is completed. Maintain ventilation and a dust-free environment during construction to avoid compromising the finish. Do not apply wood coating and latex paint simultaneously.

  2. The wood must be dry, with a moisture content not exceeding 15%. Avoid high humidity and temperature during construction.

  3. Most paint products consist of three components (main paint, thinner, and hardener). Stir each component thoroughly before mixing and strictly follow the recommended ratio.

  4. Use matching thinners and hardeners to prevent issues like lifting and wrinkling.

  5. After mixing, filter the solution and let it sit for 10–15 minutes before application.

  6. Avoid applying overly thick coats in a single layer. Ensure each layer is fully dry before applying the next.

  7. Thoroughly sand the surface before applying wood coating until the entire film feels smooth and even. Inadequate sanding may weaken interlayer adhesion and cause delamination.

Wood Coating Application Techniques

  1. Initial Dust Removal: Sand the wood surface until smooth and remove loose dust. Use a specialized dust cloth for cleaning, or an air blower for large areas (e.g., floors) to ensure thorough dust removal.

  2. Material-Specific Approach: Understand the wood type. For hardwoods (e.g., teak, beech, Bangladeshi wood), avoid using fillers or shellac-based primers to prevent discoloration and adhesion issues. For best results on hardwoods, apply paint directly. If filling is necessary, use a mix of paint and fine wood powder. For general woods, apply a thin layer of transparent filler evenly with a spatula if needed. After drying, sand thoroughly to remove excess filler and avoid paint defects.

  3. Coating Preparation: Ensure the environment and tools are clean during application. Operators should wear clean work clothes and caps.

  4. Coating Control: Apply thin coats rather than thick ones, opting for multiple thin layers. When applying multiple coats, ensure each layer is fully dry and sanded before the next.

  5. Temperature Considerations: Temperatures below 5°C will prolong drying time and may cause whitening or loss of gloss. Avoid construction under such conditions. Similarly, avoid direct sunlight or high temperatures, as excessive heat can cause rapid drying, leading to pinholes or bubbles.

  6. Humidity Control: Avoid construction when ambient humidity exceeds 85%, as this may cause issues such as whitening of the paint film.
